Fidan is expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during his visit.
Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, is going to go to Russia on Monday to discuss the situation in Ukraine amid Moscow’s invasion of the country, according to Politico.
The visit follows the meeting of representatives from Russia and Ukraine earlier this month in Istanbul for talks about a possible ceasefire in the conflict. The meeting did not lead to substantial progress to resolve hostilities, but reached an agreement on a large exchange of prisoners of war.
The exchange of prisoners of war began on Friday and was going to continue on Saturday and Sunday.
Fidan is expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during his visit. Fidan plans to emphasize Turkey’s commitment to “achieving a fair and lasting peace in the Russian-Ukraine war,” the state-run Anadolu news agency said on Saturday.
Fidan will repeat that Turkey “is ready to play her role as a mediator in the negotiations“But he will also discuss other regional and international issues,”including Syria, Gaza and Southern Caucasus“, Anadolu added.
Fidan will also meet with other high -ranking Russian officials, including Vice President Vladimir Mentinsky and Defense Minister Andrei Belusov.
