Salo has caused a video posted by Daily Mail and shows a group of Chechen fighters firing on apartment buildings in besieged Mariupol.
The video, released by the Chechen warlord Ramzan KadyrovPutin’s “ally”, also depicts Chechen soldiers celebrating as the camera turns to show the gaps in damaged apartment buildings.
The soldiers, dressed in camouflaged military equipment, raised their fists to the camera and were heard shouting “Allahu Akbar”.
In his Telegram channel, Kadyrov claimed that his fighters had cleared “Nazi territory”, following the … line of the Russian president to justify the invasion of Ukraine.
In fact, Chechnya on Thursday claimed that its forces had penetrated the defenses of Ukraine to occupy the Mariupol town hall and raise the flag of Russia. This claim was not verified and the Ukrainian armed forces stated that Russia is still trying to loot Mariupol “without success”.
The Chechen army is known for its … Hollywood-inspired videos showing their soldiers in action, when in fact they show them doing very little. Experts say the videos are just another attempt by Putin’s propaganda.
Kadyrov’s video also showed his soldiers climbing out of a building window, ostensibly to help a civilian get out. However, as the soldiers passed through a mattress, the video did not actually show anyone being transported.
Instead, a smiling fighter wearing sunglasses pulled his camera to show the scene of the disaster around him, in a style that – anywhere in the world – could be misinterpreted in a selfie video by an Instagram influencer.
A group of Kadyrov fighters was reportedly sent to try to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but was stopped by Ukrainian forces.
Images from Mariupol, home to 400,000 people before the war, show damaged buildings, burned vehicles and shocked survivors rushing out to find supplies. Residents have buried the victims in makeshift graves as the ground melts.
Mariupol has experienced some of the fiercest fighting since Putin ordered his army to enter Ukraine on February 24. Russian forces bomb the city indiscriminately, leveling large areas of the city.
Officials say at least 2,400 civilians have been killed in the city, but there are fears the toll could be much higher. An official said earlier this month he feared up to 20,000 people could have been killed.
The United Nations said on Friday it had received information about mass graves in the city, where a catastrophic Russian attack on a theater killed 300 people.
Meanwhile, the mayor of the city said on Saturday that he had spoken with the French ambassador to Ukraine about the evacuation of civilians, after French President Emanuel Macron said he would propose a plan to Russia to help people leave.
Speaking on national television, Mayor Vadym Boichenko said the situation in the besieged city remained critical, with street battles taking place in its center.
