Former Foreign Minister Analena Berbock was elected earlier tonight at the United Nations General Assembly.

The election was made by secret ballot, in which a total of 188 ballots were submitted. There were no invalid ballots, and 14 delegations were abstaining.

Mrs Berbock exceeded the required limit of the simple majority of 88 votes, securing a wide order to chair the upcoming 80th session that will take place as customary next September.

In a statement by the team of Western European and other states (Weog), the team’s spokesman praised Mrs Berbock’s institutional background and experience in international law and multilateral diplomacy, pointing out her active role as a UN advocate.

Particular reference was made to the fact that for the first time the Weog team elected a woman to this post with the aim of overthrowing the negative account of the General Assembly, which has made only five female presidents in the 80th anniversary of her history.

Weog described Mrs Berbok’s election as extremely timely, at a juncture where the UN faces serious challenges – from armed conflicts and humanitarian crises to the erosion of international law and the liquidity crisis.

He also expressed the readiness of the team to work closely with the new president on the implementation of the “Pact for the Future”, to strengthen the role of the convention in peace and security, the promotion of multilingualism, and the transparency in the process of selecting the next Secretary General.
