According to the farmers of the State of Baden-Virtemberg, only last year in the state there were losses of up to 25% and a significant decrease in sugar content in all relevant beet cultivation areas. There are many who believe that the problem is not irrelevant to climate change that has caused long periods of drought this year, followed by stormy rainfall.

A type of cicada is responsible for the spread of Stolbur – the glasswing tzitziki. The President of the German Association of Farmers said he was very worried about the rapid spread of the insect.

It is located in a series of federal states from Baden-Virtemberg via Rhine-Palatinatou, Bavaria and Hesse further north and has now been found in Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. Farmers are now seeking support and measures to deal with the problem by the relevant ministry.
