Argentinean President Javier Miley announced today in a speech before Knesset, the Israeli parliament, that his country’s embassy in Israel will be transferred to Jerusalem in 2026.

“I am proud to announce before you that in 2026 our embassy will be transferred to the city of Western Jerusalem,” he said to Parliament, where he was invited to give a speech on the occasion of his second official visit to Jerusalem. The Argentine Embassy is today near Tel Aviv.

Only the United States, Paraguay, Guatemala, Honduras, Kosovo and Papua New Guinea have an embassy in Jerusalem.

The status of Jerusalem is one of the most thorny issues in Israeli -Palestinian conflict. Israel, who conquered East Jerusalem during the Israeli -Arabian War of 1967, annexed it after that, an action that was never recognized by the international community.

Most foreign embassies are in Tel Aviv so as not to pre -prejudice the outcome of the Israeli and Palestinian negotiations on the final regime of the city.

The controversy over Jerusalem’s regime and the presence of foreign embassies was rekindled in December 2017 when President Donald Trump overturning decades of international consensus recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, causing the rage of the Palestinians.
