London, Thanasis Gavos
THE one of President Zelensky’s top advisers Alexander Rodnyansky told BBC radio that Ukraine was “not prepared to cede any territory” under an agreement with Moscow to end hostilities.
His remarks followed warnings of Russian intent to divide Ukraine.
Mr Rodnyansky commented: “If you ask people who live in those areas, they would not want to live in Russia. How can we let them go? “Much more the whole idea of dividing our country.”
He suggested a more compact version of the Budapest Memorandumwhich provided security guarantees for Ukraine after the country ‘s denuclearization in the 1990s.
“There should be something similar, which would specify steps, which countries would act exactly if security were threatened,” Rodnjanski said.
He admitted that the involvement of NATO countries in such a security arrangement would be a “delicate matter”, as the activation of a corresponding Article 5 would drag the whole of NATO into conflict with Russia.
“This is not what NATO countries want to happen and that is why negotiations are continuing,” said President Zelensky.
Referring to the new round of peace talks that will take place this week, the Ukrainian official commented that “now the pressure is on Russia.”
As he said, it is clear that “they can not continue this war for years and their morale is so low that they can not even maintain their supply.”
