Zohran Mamdani, a candidate for the left -wing wing of the Democrats, has achieved a surprise victory in the intra -party elections and will claim the New York City Hall
Mamdani was the winner of the intra -party process to raise the candidate against the favorite, Central Andrew Cuomo, after a high -cost campaign and promising to tax the highest incomes.
With almost 95% of the votes being counted, Mamdani leads with more than 43% versus 36% for Quomo. This victory is a surprise as the 33 -year -old politician, who declares “progressive and Muslim”, initially rescued by 30 percentage points of Quomo.
“It is my honor to be your Democratic candidate for the New York City Hall,” Mamdani said, addressing his supporters from the headquarters of his election campaign in Queens.
“With the vision of a city that can afford every New Yorker, we have won,” he said in his speech, promising to reject US President Donald Trump policies and “to rule the city as a model for the Democratic Party.”

Mamdani’s unexpected victory came amid Trump’s intense attacks on the US big cities, which he says, rule “far -left Democrats” “with a sick spirit”, and while the Democratic Party does not seem to have a democratic party.
“It wasn’t our night tonight. He won (ed. Zohran Mamdani), “admitted the 67 -year -old former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, speaking to his supporters before the counting of the votes was completed.
New York “deserves a mayor who is proud to nominate his achievements, not (…) a mayor who has no achievement. We deserve a mayor who will continue to reduce crime, support our police and fight anti -Semitism, “replied the outgoing Mayor Eric Adams, who had been elected to the Democratic Party, but now plans to re -run.
The Victory – Surprise and Corruption Scandals
Born in Uganda to a Indian family, Mamdani will be, if elected, the first Muslim Mayor of New York. He had the support of celebrities of the left-wing of the Democratic Party, such as Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Okassio Cortez.
Mamdani based his election campaign on social media and the excitement of a young volunteer army that plowed the streets of New York.
The 33 -year -old politician has pledged to face high costs, promising, among other things, the abolition of bus tickets, kindergartens and the freezing of rents in some buildings, as well as the construction of 200,000 new homes over the next ten years.
It intends to fund all these social benefits by taxing higher incomes.
“Congratulations to Zohran Mamdani and his thousands of supporters for their excellent election campaign. You faced the political, economic and media establishment and you won, “Sanders wrote in X.
“The billionaires and lobbyists spent millions against you (…) and you won,” commented Okassio-Cortez.
“Zohran Mamdani is very extreme for a city that is already in turmoil,” the Republican candidate for Curtis Sliaa, a radio producer who is known to establish a Citizen Patrol team, Guardian Angels, said. Sliaa was a candidate for the New York City Hall in 2021, but then lost to Eric Adams.
“It’s not time now for extreme policy. It’s time for a real leadership, “he said.
Adams’ image has been hit after a series of corruption scandals in which he allegedly involved his approach to Trump.
Mamdani has been criticized by his opponents and for his Philosophical positions and for accusing Israel of “genocide”.
However, the main message of his campaign, the reduction of the cost of life, seems to reflect on New York residents.
