Thousands of Israelis today went to the streets of Tel Aviv to demand the liberation of the last 49 hostages remaining in the Gaza Strip, in the hands of the Hamas Islamist organization.
This was the first of the Weekly Israeli demonstrations after Israel and Iran declared a ceasefire on June 24, with the mediation of US President Donald Trump after a short 12 -day war.
The crowd flooded the “Homer Square” in the center of Tel Aviv. Many were holding Israeli flags and photographs of Israelis abducted by Hamas during its unprecedented, bloody attack on Israeli territory on October 7, 2023. On the occasion of that attack, the Benjamin Netanyahu government launched a military operation.
After 20 months of war, many of the 251 hostages were released. But another 49 remain, 27 of which are dead, according to the Israeli army.
“The war with Iran ended with an agreement. The war in Gaza must end in the same way, with an agreement with which the whole world will return home, “the families ‘forum, the main organization of hostages’ relatives, said in a statement.
Some protesters addressed the US president, the narrow ally of Israel and Netanyahu. “President Trump, end the Gaza crisis. The Nobel (Peace) is waiting for you, ”he wrote a placard, referring to the ambitious goal of the Republican president who began his second term in the White House, declaring his intention to end armed conflicts, especially in the Middle East and Ukraine.
“I am addressing Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Trump,” said Liri Albag, a former Hamas hostage. “You made brave decisions on Iran. Take an equally brave one to stop the war in Gaza and bring (hostages) to their homes, “he added.
