Lebanese President Joseph Aun today ruled out the possibility of establishing the country’s relations with Israel, however, expressing his support for a peaceful settlement with the neighboring Jewish state, which continues to hold part of the Lebanese territory.
This is Lebanese’s first official reaction to Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar’s statement, who stressed on June 30 that Israel is “interested” in establishing relations with Syria and Lebanon.
The two countries remain in a state of war with Israel and Damascus has stated that a relations is “premature”.
The Lebanese president “made a distinction between peace and establishing relationships”, according to the Lebanese Presidency.
“Peace means that there is no war, which is important to us in Lebanon right now. As for the issue of establishing relationships, this is not considered in the current foreign policy of Lebanon. “he said, welcoming a delegation from a think tank.
He called on Israel to withdraw from five points he holds in South Lebanon, claiming that this presence of Israeli military forces “prevents the army from the border”.
The ceasefire agreement that ended the war between the pro -Hezbollah and Israel in November stipulates that only the Lebanese army and the blue -collars are growing in the southern part of the country.
Hezbollah, for its part, must withdraw its strengths and dismantle all military infrastructure in the area.
This week, the Lebanese authorities have given their response, which has not been made public, to a US envoy in a request for Hezbollah disarmament in the rest of the country.
The Lebanese president said in this context that the authorities were determined to “have the monopoly on weapons in the country”.
The implementation of this decision “will take into account the interests of the state and stability in order to maintain political peace on the one hand, and the national unity on the other,” he noted, pointing that Hezbollah’s disarmament would not be achieved by force.
Hezbollah, who was a long-standing political force in Lebanon, is the only lineup that maintained its arsenal, even after the Civil War in Lebanon (1975-1990), in the name of “Resistance against Israel”.
The Shiite movement, whose arsenal includes rockets, came out very weakened by the war with Israel, which essentially decimated its leadership.
