Belgian authorities announced today that they have returned to Egypt a sarcophagus 3.000 years oldwhich was seized in 2015 by police in Brussels.

“After 10 years of investigations and legal procedures, it is really an act of justice to return to their country of origin a stolen part of its (cultural) heritage”the prosecutor said Julien Muanil.

The Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office said that the sarcophagus and a smaller artifact – a wooden beard model – were handed over to the Egyptian ambassador at a special event in the Belgian capital.

These antiquities had been seized by the Belgian police in 2015, following the mobilization of Interpol informed about the Egyptian authorities. They have since been kept at the Royal Museum of Art and History in Brussels.
