The European Union prefers a trading negotiating solution with the United States, European Commission President Ursula von der Layen said on Sunday, adding that the block will extend the suspension of countermeasures to US duties by early August.
“The (means of coercion) was created for excellent situations – we have not yet arrived there,” he added, referring to the tool that allows the EU to go beyond traditional tariffs on goods and impose restrictions on the trade of services.
The President of the Commission is in response to yesterday’s announcement by Donald Trump on the imposition of a 30% duties on all goods imported by the EU, with validity from August 1.
In particular, in a letter sent to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Laen, Trump states that “from August 1, 2025, we will impose on the European Union a duty of only 30% on its products sent to the United States separately from special tariffs.”
In the same letter he says that “if for any reason you decide to increase your duties and retaliate, then the percentage you choose to increase will be added to the 30% we impose.”
