At least eight Palestinians, mostly children, were killed on Sunday in an Israeli air attack in Gaza while trying to collect water, according to local authorities. The Israeli army admitted that the rocket hit the wrong spot, “tens of meters away from the target”, and regretted the loss of civilians.

The attack hit a water distribution point in the refugee camp of Nuseirat, causing the deaths of six children and the injury of 17 more people, Dr. Ahmed Abu Saipan of Al-AWDA Hospital said.

Gaza water deficiencies have deteriorated rapidly in recent weeks, due to stopping for desalination and drainage units due to lack of fuel, with residents based on improvised water collection points.

A few hours later, 12 more people were killed by an Israeli attack on a market in Gaza, including Dr. Ahmad Qandil, according to Palestinian media. The Israeli army did not comment immediately.

The Gaza Ministry of Health said the total number of dead from the start of the war in October 2023 exceeds 58,000, of which 139 were recorded in the last 24 hours. Over half the dead are women and children.
