The European Foreign Affairs Council is meeting in Brussels today, with key issues on the agenda of Russian aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, developments in agriculture, as well as the Agreement and the Mediterranean Union Reform.

The EU’s High Representative on foreign policy issues, on arrival at the Council, made statements giving the key axes of discussions.

Referring to Ukraine, the High Representative welcomed the support of the United States and the promotion of the new sanctions package by saying “we really welcome news from the United States that they will provide weapons to Ukraine so that it can defend it” and added “hopefully”.

She expressed the intention of further support for Ukraine, stressing the importance of international pressure on Russia and the implementation of Biden government promises, “weapons deliveries continue and Ukraine to receive what has promised it”.

On the issue of the Middle East and more specifically Gaza, Mrs Calas said that “the situation in Gaza is still very bad. It is devastating from a humanitarian point of view. ” Regarding Israel he noted that “we have reached a common understanding with Israel to substantially improve the situation in the field. We see positive signs, such as the opening of border crossings, the restoration of electricity lines and the supply of water. ” However, he stressed that “we need to see more, this is clear.”

Finally, he also referred to Moldova, stressing that “we will discuss the foreign malicious intervention in the elections and what we can do to enhance Moldova’s resilience.”
