A temporary ceasefire in Mariupol from 10 am on Thursday, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced tonight, in order to evacuate civilians from the besieged port city of Ukraine.

The measure will allow the opening of a “humanitarian corridor” to the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhia, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.

“In order for this humanitarian operation to succeed, we propose that it be carried out with the direct participation of representatives of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Committee of the Red Cross,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also called on Kyiv to guarantee “unconditional respect” for this local ceasefire by giving written notice to the Kremlin, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the ICC before 6 a.m. Thursday.

Moscow is also urging the Ukrainian military to make a commitment to the safety of buses traveling along the agreed route on this “humanitarian corridor”.
