Ecuador’s government announced tonight that Jose Adolf Masia Villamarthe leader of the violent Tsonos gang, is issued in the US.

In a photo released by the country’s penitentiary service, Villamar, also known as the nickname “Fito”, with handcuffs, helmet and bulletproof vest, accompanied by police.

Fito, the largest drug trafficker in the country, had escaped from prison last year where he was sentenced to 34 years in prison. He was again arrested last month.

According to the penitentiary service, he “departed from the Freedom of La Roka’s deprivation center” as part of its issuance process.

In the US, “Fito” is accused of trafficking in drugs and weapons. Last week he accepted his extradition and thus became the first Ecuadorian national to be issued in another country, in the context of this procedure approved by a referendum in 2024 and actively promoted by President Daniel Nipoa, with the aim of fighting organized crime.

Villamar is also alleged to be linked to the murder, in August 2023, by Fernando Viavissenio, one of the main candidates in the Ecuadorian presidential election.
