Signs of withdrawal of Russian forces from Chernobyl – Chernihiv

by

Signs of withdrawal of Russian troops from Chernihiv and Chernobyl in northern Ukraine are reported by Western media and Washington. It is noted that Ukraine and Russia will continue their peace talks digitally on Friday, as a senior Ukrainian official said yesterday, after the end of the negotiations in Turkey.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced on Wednesday that Ukrainian forces are regaining control, also in the southeastern regions of Orlov and Zakhradivka.

In particular, a video posted on social media seems to show that Ukrainian troops have recaptured territory from Russian forces near the city of Chernihiv. Ukrainian soldiers are seen in a video shot in the village of Sloboda, about 19 kilometers from Chernihiv.

The village Sloboda is of vital strategic importance for Ukraine’s efforts to break the Russian siege of Chernihiv. It would also be one of the first major victories to this end, CNN comments. The video has been located geographically and its authenticity has been verified by the American network.

In addition, some Russian forces have withdrawn from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, according to a senior US defense official.

Chernobyl is located 97 km northwest of Kiev. The site fell to the Russians in the early days of the invasion in late February, sparking fears of a nuclear accident at the station.

The withdrawal comes as a section of Russian troops near the Ukrainian capital is being reorganized.

On Wednesday, the Pentagon spokesman John Kirby confirmed that the United States has seen about 20% of Russian forces moving away from Kyiv “reorganized”, with some heading for Belarus. Kirby said the relocated troops were generally fighting in areas north and northwest of Kiev.

The move by Russian forces near Chernobyl and other areas around Kyiv comes after the Russian Defense Ministry announced that its forces would withdraw from Kyiv. Despite Russian allegations, Kyiv and surrounding cities have been bombed for the past 24 hours.

“Our estimate would be, as we said yesterday, that they would reorganize these troops, supply them, and most likely employ them elsewhere in Ukraine,” Kirby said.

In a new message last night Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he does not believe the Russian side’s promise to reduce its military activity, adding that its army is preparing for new hostilities in the eastern part of the country.

Russian forces in Ukraine reorganize and prepare for new attackswarned earlier the representative of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.

He noted that the command of the Ukrainian armed forces has observed some movements away from Kyiv and Chernihiv, but does not consider it a mass withdrawal.

On the battlefield, The death toll from a Russian missile strike on a government building in the Ukrainian city of Mykolaev (southern) on Tuesday has risen to 15, according to the governor.

An oil tanker was destroyed in a rocket attack on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro (southeast), a local official said, citing a Russian military strike. He said there was no information on casualties
