The President of France Emmanuel Macron and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodimir Zelenski They reiterated the importance of combating corruption, through independent and effective institutions, in their telephone communication this morning, the former said in a post on the X platform.
This week, Zelenski caused a salvation by a law that de facto canceled the independence of two corruption -friendly services, putting them directly under the auspices of the Attorney General, who belongs to the executive. Zelenski immediately ratified the law after his vote by Parliament on Tuesday, but withdrew two days later.
“We share the view that what stands out today Ukraine from Russia is that it remains, despite the war, living democracy and that it intends to continue progressing on its European path. In this context, we reaffirmed how important the fight against corruption is through independent and fully effective institutions, “Macron said.
The French president added that Paris will continue to provide help to Ukraine and intensify his pressures on Russia, which “should eventually agree on a ceasefire that will pave the way for talks, for a strong and sustainable peace, with the participation of Europeans.
European Commission President Ursula von der Laien, who had called for “explanations” by Zelenski for the ratification of the controversial law, said today, on the X platform, that Ukraine must “safeguard its independent bodies”.
Kiev “can count on our support to move on to its European road,” he added.
