Russian forces focus east and south – Dead Italian in Donbas

by

The Russian military intends to continue its activities and consolidate its presence in the eastern and southern parts of Ukraine, the Ukrainian General Staff said in a news release.

He spoke in support of the US Alliance, but said that maintaining some independence was important for Russia. Fighting is expected to continue in these areas, he continued.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warns that Moscow wants to organize what it called a pseudo-referendum in the Kherson region to form a “people’s democracy” like those established in separatist territories.

The Ukrainian staff has assured that Russian forces have not been able to gain territory anywhere. Kharkiv continues to be bombed, while an attempt by the Russians to penetrate the Ukrainian defenses near Izium failed. An attempt to advance on Mykolaif was also unsuccessful, the same source said.

To the north, some units withdrew. Moscow has said Russian forces will escalate the attack in Kyiv and focus on Donbas.

President Zelensky also said, “I am sure it is very pleasing for all of you to read the news and see the Ukrainian cities gradually being liberated from the occupation forces,” in a videotaped sermon, warning that it was not a time for complacency. “We all want victory”, but there will be other battles. “We have a very difficult road ahead of us to achieve everything we want.”

Italian who fought on the side of the separatists in Donbas killed by a grenade

Eddie Ongaro, an Italian who fought alongside separatist forces in Donbas, was killed by a grenade. Ongaro, 46, was originally from Portuguaro in northeastern Italy.
He went to Donbass in 2015 to support the separatist forces and joined the Prizrak Brigade. According to the newspaper La Repubblica, he used the nom de guerre “Mozambique”.

He is the first Italian citizen to be killed in the war in Ukraine.
