Biodiversity: The EU advocated strong goals for nature in the UN negotiations

THE EU Welcomes the progress made in the international negotiations for biodiversity carried out by March 13 to 29 in Genevawhile recognizing the need to pursue ambitious goals and make ambitious efforts to ensure success of the United Nations Conference on Biodiversity (COP15) in Kunming later this year.

It was about him third round of COP15 negotiations and the aim was to agree on a global framework for biodiversity after 2020. In Geneva, governments have reached a common approach to adopting new goals and objectives for nature and humans for the next decade, but much remains to be done. They are also planning a fourth additional round of talks in Nairobi from June 21 to 26.

The EU will continue to support one an ambitious and transformative global framework for halting and reversing biodiversity loss, which will be linked to an effective monitoring system for on – the – spot measurement of progress and will be supported through the mobilization of resources from all sources. As part of the EU’s promotional activities for COP15, Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries Virginie Sinkevits visited Africa and will soon meet key partners in Asia and Latin America to discuss ways to reach a strong and binding agreement. Under the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Commission is negotiating on behalf of the EU and its Member States.

The Commission’s commitment to the protection and restoration of biodiversity in Europe and globally is set out in the European Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, which is a key element of European Green Agreement.
