Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski called on Friday to urgently upgrade at the leadership level of security guarantees to Ukraine, demanding the participation of US President Donald Trump.
Ukrainian officials are seeking strong commitments from the Kiev allies as part of a possible peacekeeping agreement to end the war with Russia, which is already in its fourth year.
Speaking to reporters in Kiev, Zelenski said he was expecting to continue discussions with European leaders next week on security commitments to NATO standards.
“We need an architecture that is clear for everyone,” he said. “Then we want to contact President Trump during a meeting … and tell him how we see it.”
Zelenski added that he would also like to see the allies validate any security guarantees through their national parliaments.
“We want legally binding security guarantees. We do not want (another) Memorandum of Budapest, “he said, referring to the 1994 agreement, in which Ukraine abandoned its nuclear arsenal in exchange for security assurances.
