US: Provider for immediate deportation of migrants detained at the border repealed

The USA announced today that they will end within the next few weeks immigration policy since the beginning of the pandemic, which effectively shut down the asylum system at the Mexico.

Health authorities have ruled that the ban is no longer necessary to protect public health. The so-called “Article 42”, the provision that so far allows the immediate expulsion of migrants detained at the border, will be lifted on May 23, according to Interior Minister Alejandro Mallorca.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the decision was made after examining “the current state of public health” and “the availability of tools to treat Covid-19”.

The decision was immediately criticized by Republican politicians who accuse President Joe Biden’s government of causing a “Humanitarian catastrophe” at the borders. “The worst news for the country today: the Biden government will allow twice as many illegal immigrants to enter,” Senator Mitt Romney wrote on Twitter. At the same time, he said it was the “best new policy” for his party in the run-up to the November by-elections.

Moderate Democrat Joe Manchin also spoke of a “scary decision,” saying the country was “not at all ready to face these flows.”

Mallorca acknowledged that the measure could encourage illegal immigrants. “We know that traffickers will spread false information to exploit vulnerable migrants. “But we are clear: those who have no legal reason to stay in the US will be deported.”

The ministry noted that the government will implement a “strategy to manage” the increase in arrivals. Six hundred agents have already been sent to the border to check the files of new arrivals, process asylum applications and quickly deport those who do not qualify, Mallorca said. “Depending on the needs” it is not excluded that aid will be sent.

Under the pandemic rules, all adults and most immigrant families were immediately sent back to Mexico without being allowed to seek asylum in the United States. Only unaccompanied minors were allowed to stay in the US.
