German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz said on Sunday that Russia’s war in Ukraine is being prepared for the possibility of a long -term war, as wars are usually ended either by military defeat or due to financial exhaustion, as well as not seeing the horizon.
Mertz made this comment just a day before the expiration of US President Donald Trump’s deadline to schedule a meeting between Russian and Ukraine presidents in order to open the way for his peace talks.
Trump even threatened that there would be “consequences” if the meeting did not take place.
Mertz and French President Emmanuel Macron have repeatedly stated that the blame is of Russian President Vladimir Putin and have urged the United States to impose stricter sanctions on Moscow.
“I am preparing for the possibility that this war will last a long time,” Merz said in an interview with the Public Broadcasting Network ZDF.
As he said, efforts are being made to intensive diplomatic initiatives to end the war as soon as possible, but this cannot be “at a price to capitulate Ukraine”, because then Russia will target another country.
“And we will be tomorrow,” Mertz added. “This is not an option.”
The German Chancellor refused to refer to the possibility of developing German troops in Ukraine as part of security guarantees in the event of a peacekeeping agreement.
It is recalled that Britain and France are leading a proposal for the development of a “safeguarding force” to prevent possible future Russian aggression, but Germany’s prospect of integration into the “alliance of willing” has caused reflection on the country that carries its mark.
