War in Ukraine: Thousands of civilians flee Mariupol – All developments

by

The war in Ukraine continues for the 38th day. However, Russian forces appear to be easing the siege around Kyiv and Chernihiv and regrouping to focus on the eastern part of the country, where the Pentagon has warned of a “prolonged” clash with the Ukrainian military that could take months.

In southeastern Ukraine, Mariupol remains at loggerheads on both sides and the humanitarian situation there is catastrophic. After weeks of bombing this strategically important city in the Sea of Azov, local authorities say at least 5,000 people have been killed.

According to the latest estimates, about 160,000 people are still trapped inside the city, the occupation of which would allow the Russians to secure a territorial continuity, from Crimea to the two breakaway pro-Russian republics of Donbass. At the same time, more than 3,000 people escaped from the Mariupol area by bus and private vehicles, the Ukrainian authorities announced, while the Red Cross, after a first failure, is today preparing a new attempt to remove civilians from the besieged and destroyed city.
