Inter -community conflicts in the northern part of Ghana have claimed the lives of at least 31 people and have forced about 48,000 residents to leave their homes in late August, according to government officials.

Interior Minister Mubarak Mundakas said 13,253 residents of the area where bloody riots broke out, after territorial dispute, crossed the border searching for refuge in the neighboring Conestice Coast.

The riots broke out on August 24 in the border community of Gbinigiri, due to a territorial difference involving neighboring communities. When a businessman wanted to take advantage of the recently bought land, the locals rose and resisted violently while setting fire to the seller’s house.

Minister Mundaka said more than 700 soldiers and police have been deployed in recent days in the area, where a ban was imposed. A local official said that calm is gradually restored, with the elders of communities working with security services to prevent any resurgence of conflicts.
