Britain may build up to seven new nuclear power plants as part of a radical expansion of domestic energy following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Business Secretary Quasi Quarteng told the Sunday Telegraph.
“There is a place where we have six or seven locations in the UK by 2050,” Quarteng told the newspaper.
The Sunday Telegraph reported that ministers agreed to set up a new development program called Great British Nuclear to locate sites, bypass bureaucracy to speed up the planning process and bring together private companies to manage each site.
He said Britain’s new energy security strategy, due to be unveiled on Thursday, is expected to commit the government to supporting the construction of at least two new large-scale nuclear power plants by 2030, in addition to small modular reactors.
