Martin Jger, 61, so far German ambassador to Kiev, is currently taking over the leadership of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND).

On September 6th, Juger bid farewell to his career as a diplomat with a post on X writing: “I am grateful to all Ukrainian partners and friends, in the wonderful German embassy team, federal police and international colleagues. It was a privilege to work with all of you. ”

Juger succeeds Bruno Cal, who, after nine years at the helm of the External Information Service, moves to Rome at his own request to serve as ambassador of Germany to the Holy See.

The main mission of the new leader will be to restore the reputation of German intelligence services, which is, inter alia, the failure to warn in a timely manner of Russia’s intention to invade Ukraine.

In his new role, Martin Jagger will lead about 6,500 employees.

His rich biography

As a career diplomat, Mr Jagger served as a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry in 2005-2008 under Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Immediately afterwards he left the ministry to work as head of Daimler’s Foreign Relations Department, from where he returned to appoint an ambassador to the Kabul For the period 2013-14.

Until 2016 was Wolfgang Schoeble’s close associate at the Ministry of Finance and served as its representative during its period Greek crisiswith constant interventions – often in a strong style.

Immediately afterwards he served as Deputy Minister of Interior and Development to the State Government of Baden-Wiremberg to return as an ambassador, first to the Baghdad The period 2021-23 and from 2023 to Kyiv.
