Lithuanian director Manta Kvendaravitsus, 45, was killed while trying to leave Mariupol, the port of southeastern Ukraine besieged by the Russian armed forces, Kyiv announced on Sunday.
“The Russian invaders killed the Lithuanian director Mantas Kventaravitsus, creator of the documentary ‘Mariupolis’, as he was trying to leave Mariupol,” the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said via Twitter.
The documentary filmmaker’s death was also confirmed by Russian director Vitaly Mansky, founder of the Moscow-based Artdocfest festival, to which Mantas Kvendaravitsus had been invited.
“He was killed today in Mariupol, with the camera in his hand, in this stupid war of evil against the whole world,” Vitaly Mansky said via Facebook.
Through Twitter, the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed “shock” at the news of the author’s death.
“He was killed in Mariupol, where he recorded the horrors of the Russian war. “His previous film, ‘Mariupolis’ (2016), told the story of a besieged city with a strong will to live,” the Lithuanian diplomacy added.
Born in 1976, Mantas Kvendaravitsus became famous with this documentary, which was presented for the first time at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2016.
