Conservative nationalist Victor Orban declared victory in the Hungarian elections after the results show a lead in Fidesz’s party and described Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as an “enemy” in his inaugural speech.
With 94% of the vote counted, Fidesz has 53%. The alliance led by Peter Markey-Zai received 35% of the vote.
“This is a great victory,” Orban told supporters in the capital, Budapest.
“I can see it from the moon and I can definitely see it from Brussels,” he added meaningfully.
“We have never had so many enemies,” Orban added, referring specifically to the “Brussels bureaucrats”, the “international conventional media” and the Ukrainian president, as reported by BBC but also the CNN.
Hungary borders Ukraine and has so far accepted more than half a million refugees. Orban insists that by helping refugees but refusing to send weapons to Ukraine, he is keeping his country out of the war.
This is Fidesz’s fourth election victory since 2010.
Orban’s relations with the EU are particularly difficult, with Brussels stigmatizing the undermining of democratic institutions in Hungary. It is characteristic that during the election campaign, the slogan of the opposition was “Orban or Europe”.
