More than a thousand people crossed the British coast -headed channel yesterday, Friday, while the British government was sending a third immigrant back to France.
The number of people who are attempting the cross -section highlights the scale of the challenge facing the government of British Prime Minister Kir Starmer as he struggles to control the crisis. The latest data from the interior ministry show that 1,072 made this trip with 13 boats.
With yesterday’s arrivals, the number of people who have made the crossbar so far in 2025 amounted to 32,103 – a record for this year of the year.
Ministers hope that the agreement “one inside, one outside” concluded with France will act deterrently, showing immigrants that they will be sent back if they cross the Channel.
But yesterday’s scale shows that politics has so far had a slight impact on those who have gathered on the coast of northern France.
The third person who was sent back was an Iranian who returned to France yesterday, Friday.
His deportation took place after that, earlier yesterday, a man from Eritrea, whose judicial appeal was rejected to stop his removal, as well as after the expulsion of an Indian national yesterday, Thursday.
The first flights that, under the same agreement, will transfer asylum seekers from France to the United Kingdom are expected to take place next week.
The government intends to increase the number of people who are sent back under the pilot agreement in the coming months.
Under the agreement with France, people arriving in the United Kingdom with small boats can be reserved and returned to France, in exchange for entering the United Kingdom of equal number of people who have applied to go to Britain through a safe and legal road.
However, the shadow Minister of Interior of Conservatives Chris Philip attacked the deal, saying that “it does not offer the slightest deterrent effect” while describing the number of returns “sad” and said that “boasting about him is absurd.”
Sources from the Interior Ministry, however, pointed out the fact that they were forced returns and compared with the previous government’s agreement with Rwanda – which the Labor Party abolished – on which in two years only four volunteers went to East Africa.
