The appointment of General David Zini, nominated by Benjamin Netanyahu, as head of Sin Beet (Internal Security Service) was approved this evening by the committee responsible for appointing senior public officials, the Israeli prime minister’s office announced.

Netanyahu’s decision in May to appoint General Zini to this position was considered ‘Illegal’ Initially by the State Prosecutor of the State of Israel, but the Commission judged differently and ratified the appointment announced by the government.

The decision puts an end to the vortex that caused this controversial appointment, as the selection of Sin Bett was decided by Netanyahu when the prime minister was suspected of conflict with interests due to the investigation carried out by the internal security service against his close associates.

The Gunis Committee, which was named after the judge who is its chairman, ruled that “No problem of moral integrity prevents the prime minister from choosing Sin Beth’s leader.”

In the letter sent to Netanyahu the committee states that David Zini has no “Problem of moral integrity”.

Son of immigrants from France and grandson of a survivor of the Nazi extermination camp Auschwitz, General Zini was in charge of the Israeli Army Education Administration and Head of the General Staff.

Netanyahu credits him with the report he wrote in March 2023, six months before the Hamas attack after the war broke out in Gaza, in which he presented the gaps of the Israeli army in the event of a “surprise invasion” in Israel from Palestinian territory.

Zini succeeds him Ronen Barwho resigned after the government’s announcement that he intended to dismiss him last April.
