by

The Korean Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KCDA) announced Tuesday that 246,135 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed in the 24 hours to midnight Monday and 209 patients died due to complications of COVID-19.

The death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic in South Korea, which is being hit by a wave attributed to the most contagious Omicron variant, and in particular subtype BA.2, has reached 17,662 deaths out of a total of 14,267,401 infections, according to KCDA. The mortality rate remained unchanged at 0.12%.

The number of cases increased dramatically from the previous one, when 127,190 were announced, partly because there are fewer tests on weekends. However, it is significantly lower than the 347,490 cases that were confirmed last Tuesday.

The number of patients with COVID-19 in hospitals in a serious to critical condition, key indicator, increased to 1,121 (+13 in 24 hours).

At this stage, 86.7% of the population of South Korea’s 52 million people has been fully vaccinated, while 64% have now received a booster dose, according to official figures.
