US President Donald Trump confirmed today that he has lit the “green light” to the CIA to conduct covert operations in Venezuela, signaling a serious escalation of Washington’s pressure on the government of Nicolas Maduro.
The revelation about Trump’s order to the CIA regarding the conduct of operations in Venezuela was made by the newspaper New York Timesciting US officials.
At the same time, the American president said yesterday Wednesday that “examines” the possibility of ordering his army to strike at “terrain” against drug cartels in Venezuela.
However, he refrained from commenting on the newspaper’s information New York Times in which he authorized the CIA to conduct covert operations in Venezuela against the president’s government Nicolas Maduro, while being asked if he gave the American spy agency an order to “neutralize” the leader of Venezuela, replied: “What you are asking me is a ridiculous question. Not really a ridiculous question, but wouldn’t it be ridiculous of me to answer?’
According to information from the New York Times, a classified document from the Trump administration authorizes covert CIA operations in Venezuela and the wider Caribbean, with the aim of bringing down Nicolas Maduro.
Asked why he approved operations of the American spy agency in Venezuela, Mr Donald Trump he referred to illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
“For two reasons”the Republican said. “First, they emptied their prisons in the US”he argued, adding that prisoners were sent “across the border”as well “we had open borders”. And “the other is drugs”he added.
He presented no evidence for the claim that Caracas is sending ex-prisoners to his country.
US strikes against ‘narco-terrorists’
THE Donald Trump announced yesterday Tuesday in a post on social media that six alleged drug traffickers were killed in a new US missile strike against a vessel off the coast of Venezuela. It was about fifth known such blow since the beginning of September, against the background of the rapid escalation of tensions between Washington and Caracas.
“Intelligence confirmed that the vessel was trafficking drugs and was linked to illegal narco-terrorist networks,” he wrote in a post on Truth Social.
At least 27 people have been killed in these strikes, according to what has been announced by the US government.
However, the legality of these strikes, in foreign or international waters, without the suspects being arrested or interrogated, has raised objections.
Wounds on the ground
As Washington blames Venezuela’s president Maduro and his government that they run a drug-trafficking ring to the US market, have since early September deployed an armada of eight warships and a nuclear-powered submarine off the coast of Venezuela, officially as part of an anti-trafficking operation.
The American president stated that “examines” the possibility of ordering his army to strike at “terrain” against drug cartels in Venezuela, without giving further details.
“I don’t want to say more, but we’re looking at the terrain at the moment because we control the sea very well,” he responded, in the Oval Office of the White House, to a reporter’s question about possible ground strikes.
The deployment of elements of the US military in the Caribbean has strengthened the scenario of an operation against the government of the Latin American state, as the two countries have had a conflictual relationship for years.
Trump has often singled out the Venezuelan government “narco-terrorist cartel”and President Maduro “fugitive leader of this cartel”.
“Drug trafficking is a pretext”
On the other side, the president Nicolas Maduro and top officials in his government insist that Venezuela will defend itself against any “attacker”.
Caracas denies the US accusations and, reacting to the deployment of US armed forces, which it sees as “military threat”conducts training of his own armed forces and mobilized reserves.
For the president MaduroWashington uses drug trafficking as pretext for enforcement “regime change” in his country, to get his hands on his country’s vast oil reserves, which are among the largest on the planet.
