The incident occurred between 09:30 and 09:40 (local time, 10:30 – 10:40 Greek time), when three or four burglars entered through the 2nd floor window in the museum’s “Gallery of Apollo”, where, among other things, the French Crown Jewels are kept.
The footage shows the masked burglars removing the 9 jewels from their display cases, including a tiara, a necklace and a brooch that once belonged to Napoleon Bonaparte and his wife Josephine.
French newspaper Le Parisien reported that there were four attackers in total: two were dressed as workers wearing yellow vests, and the other two were riding a scooter.
French Culture Minister Rashida Dutti said security camera footage showed the burglars “entering calmly in four minutes, they break shop windows, take their loot and leave. No violence, in a very professional manner».
One of the jewels was later found broken “near” the museum – Le Parisien newspaper said it was believed to be the crown of Napoleon III’s wife, Empress Eugenie.
However, the famous Regent white diamond, the largest gem in the collection on display in the same room weighing over 140 carats, was not stolen.
Sotheby’s estimates that the diamond is worth more than $60 million.
According to what has become known, the perpetrators – unknown at the moment – went up to the second floor with a mobile crane and broke the windows of the hall with the help of a wheel, in broad daylight and with a crowd of people around the spot.
Visitors to the museum, which had opened at 09:00, were quickly evacuated “without any incident,” the Louvre said.
Manhunt for the perpetrators
After the robbery, the 4 burglars fled “on high-powered scooters” (motorcycles) and are being sought, Paris prosecutor Laure Bequiot announced to BFM TV.
In fact, he referred to the possible existence of “principals” and “executive bodies” within the criminal gang.
