The candidate of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhuman is the new “chairman» at Occupied of Cyprus, after prevailing comfortably over his opponent, the outgoing “president” Ersin Tatar in the “presidential elections” in the Turkish Cypriot community.
Tufan Erhuman scored a sweeping victory from the first round against Tatar, who is backed by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.
Tufan Erhuman receives 62.76% and Ersin Tatar 35.80%.
According to data from the “supreme electoral council”, 122,195 out of 218,313 voters voted.
Of the 122,195 ballots, 119,948 were deemed valid and 2,247 invalid.
In his first statements, Erhuman promised to “be the president of all Turkish Cypriots with complete neutrality, guardian of freedom and equality”.
“I said we would all rule together — and that’s what we will do. We will work as a team, we will be united. It doesn’t matter what party anyone belongs to. Merit will be the basis of our work. Our interest will be this land and our children,” he said characteristically.
Annita Dimitriou: The Turkish Cypriots have turned their backs on the two-state solution
The president of the House of Representatives of Cyprus, Annita Dimitriou, in her post on X, states that “the Turkish Cypriots, with their vote, have turned their backs on the two-state solution. Congratulations to Tufan Erhuman for his victory. We hope that his emergence as the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community will pave the way for meaningful negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem in the agreed framework.”
