The United States obstructs Israel to impose sanctions on Hamas or Gaza, as the terrorist group delays the return of the bodies of the murdered hostages, Israeli public broadcaster Kan reported on Saturday.
The report, citing sources involved, notes that Israel is growing increasingly irritated that Hamas has not returned any bodies since Tuesday, despite Israel believing it has the ability to do so.
Initial reports that Hamas would return more bodies on Friday turned out to be false. However, the sources said there was hope that this could happen today.
The sources said the constant “wave” of senior US officials visiting Israel was a signal to Jerusalem not to take any steps that could be seen as jeopardizing the truce.
The sources also said the US is pressing mediators Egypt and Qatar to ensure Hamas fulfills its obligation to return all hostages.
Late Tuesday, Hama delivered two coffins to Israel through the Red Cross containing the remains of Kibbutz residents Nir Oz, Ari “Zalman” Zalmanovic, 85, and Tamir Adhar, 38.
The repatriation of the bodies of Zalmanovic and Adhar reduced the number of remains of dead captives still held in the Strip from 15 to 13. At the start of the ceasefire on October 10, the bodies of 28 dead hostages were being held inside the Gaza Strip.
Hamas had pledged to return within 72 hours from the partial Israeli withdrawal, but later stated that he had difficulty locating some of them, and required heavy equipment to retrieve them.
