Vilnius airport in Lithuania closed on Saturday due to weather balloons invading the airspace from the neighboring Belarusaccording to the Baltic country’s National Crisis Management Center. This is the fourth time air traffic has been disrupted this month. The airport will remain closed until 02:00 on Sunday, Greek time.
It is recalled that the airports of Vilnius and Kaunas were also closed on Friday night after radar detected “dozens of balloons”.
In recent weeks, European aviation has been repeatedly plunged into chaos due to the appearance of drones and other air violations, including at airports in Copenhagen, Munich and the Baltic region.
Lithuania has said the balloons are being sent by smugglers carrying illegal cigarettes, but it also blames Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, for not stopping the operations.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene said Friday that the country’s National Security Committee will meet next week to assess the situation.
