A US Navy helicopter and fighter jet went down in the South China Sea in two separate accidents on Sunday, the US Pacific Fleet said today.

Initially an MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter, on a “routine operation” from the aircraft carrier Nimitz, crashed into the South China Sea. The three occupants were rescued, according to the report.

About half an hour later, an F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet, which had also been recovered from the USS Nimitz, went down in the same sea area. The two crew members managed to leave the aircraft in time and were later rescued, according to the same source.

“All involved are safe and in stable condition,” the US Pacific Fleet statement said, adding that the causes of the two accidents were under investigation.

The loss of a fighter jet and a helicopter in the South China Sea comes as US President Donald Trump is on a tour of Asia, his first since returning to the White House.

Earlier this year, two F/A-18 Super Hornet fighters fell off the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman in the Red Sea, eight days apart: one during the landing process and the other during a deck maneuver.
