At least 16 people were killed and 36 others injured when the bus they were traveling in plunged off a 300-meter cliff in central Bolivia, police said. The accident occurred yesterday Monday in Morochata, Cochabamba province, southeast of the capital La Paz.

According to Bolivian media reports, the 23-year-old bus driver survived, was arrested and is being questioned.

About 1,400 people die each year in traffic accidents in Bolivia, according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior. In March, 37 people were killed when two buses collided in Potosi, in the southern part of the Andean country.
