Images showing blue-furred dogs near the Chernobyl nuclear disaster zone in northern Ukraine are troubling their keepers.
The Dogs of Chernobyl group, which has been caring for strays in the area since 2017, posted a video on its Instagram account showing several blue-furred dogs in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
“We are on site now catching dogs to be spayed and we came across three dogs that were completely blue”the organization said in an Instagram post with more than 330,000 views.
“We don’t know the reason and we’re trying to catch them so we can find out what’s going on,” the caption reads, explaining that the dogs changed color recently.

Team leaders believe the animals came into contact with a chemical, but are reassuring the public that the dogs appear “very active and healthy,” according to the nypost.
Each year, the Chernobyl Dogs program, which began in 2017, provides medical care and food to the approximately 700 dogs living in the 18-square-mile exclusion zone.
These dogs are descendants of pets that were abandoned after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 when people were forced to evacuate their homes.
