US justice has again blocked, indefinitely, the deployment of the National Guard in Portland, dealing a blow to the US president Donald Trumpat odds with Democratic-controlled municipalities and states.
On October 20, a federal appeals court allowed the government to deploy about 200 National Guard members to Portland, amid protests against the immigration police (ICE), Trump’s main body for implementing the mass deportation policy. The same Court of Appeal, however, decided late Tuesday night that it will re-examine the case at an unspecified date, with an expanded composition, blocking the deployment of the National Guard.
“The Court of Appeals sends a clear message: the president cannot send the military into cities for no reason,” said Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield. Today, Wednesday, “we will go to the Court of First Instance to present our arguments so that this development can be stopped forever”, he added in a post on the X platform.
The judge of the Court of First Instance who had blocked the deployment of the army in the first phase, in early October, had scheduled a three-day hearing from today until Friday in order to rule on the merits of the request.
Courts have already halted the deployment of the National Guard in Chicago as well, as requested by the city’s mayor and Illinois’ Democratic governor. Trump appealed on Oct. 17 to the Supreme Court, seeking approval to continue the policy.
Since June, Trump has sent the National Guard to Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and Memphis, each time without the approval of local Democratic officials.
