by

A 38-year-old German man was shot dead by police near the Swiss city of Zurich on Wednesday night after he opened fire on law enforcement officers, fatally wounding a woman accompanying him, police said.

The German national, unknown as a former to the cantonal police, has been wanted by the authorities since March 31, she clarified.

He allegedly abducted a man in the canton of Zurich, who was soon released.

As the suspect was in possession of firearms, police called for an intervention unit when the suspect was located in Valiselen, a community not far from the financial capital of the Alpine state.

The operation unit tried to arrest the suspect shortly before 20:00 (local time; 21:00 Greek time), but the man pulled out a gun and started firing.

According to the police, he injured the woman who accompanied him. The members of the operation unit returned fire, fatally injuring the man.

Both he and his companion succumbed to their injuries on the spot, despite the immediate intervention of first aid, according to the announcement of the police of the canton of Zurich.

The police are conducting an additional investigation under the supervision of the Zurich prosecutor.

Violent crimes involving the use of firearms, including exchanges of fire with law enforcement, are very rare in Switzerland.
