THE Ukrainian government accused Hungary of helping Russia continue its aggression against Ukraine amid escalating tensions between neighboring countries.
The Foreign Ministry also accused Hungary of fostering Russia’s “sense of impunity” for alleged war crimes.
Oleg Nikolenko, a spokesman for Ukraine’s foreign ministry, wrote on Twitter that “Hungary’s reluctance to acknowledge Russia’s responsibility for the atrocities” encouraged it to “commit new crimes.”
“If Hungary wants to help, it must stop harming the unity of the EU,” he added.
At the same time, the Prime Minister Victor Orbanan ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin despite Hungary’s accession to NATO, was re-elected earlier this week.
Hungary opposes the new and many existing sanctions already imposed on Russia and has refused to supply arms to Ukraine.
On Wednesday, Orban told Putin that Hungary would be willing to pay Russia in rubles for gas imports – a move that other European countries have ruled out.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry also criticized the statement, accusing it Hungary undermines EU unity.
