EU: Agreement on the 5th package of sanctions against Moscow

The ban on Russian coal imports and the ban on access to EU ports for Russian ships are among the measures included in the 5th package of sanctions against Moscow, which was finalized today by the ambassadors of the EU member states (COREPER).

In particular, the French Presidency of the EU announced that the 5th “substantial” package of sanctions is being extended to new areas, in the context of the reaction to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and includes the following:

Sanctions against oligarchs, Russian propagandists, members of the security apparatus and the army, and sanctions against industrial and technological entities linked to the Russian attack on Ukraine.

In addition, the following measures are included:

Freezing assets of several Russian banks.

Prohibition of coal imports from Russia.

Arms embargo in Russia.

10 billion euro ban on exports to Russia, including high-tech products

Prohibition of imports from Russia, worth 5.5 billion euros: raw materials and critical materials.

Prohibition of access to EU ports for ships flying the Russian flag.

Prohibition of road transport from Russia and Belarus.

This package is expected to be approved by the Council in a written procedure with a view to its publication tomorrow Friday in the Official Journal of the EU.
