So far, official sources in the Ukrainian forces have not confirmed the information that has been circulating in the last hours and speaks of the use of chemical weapons in the besieged Mariupol.

Earlier yesterday, the Ukrainian Azov Battalion reported that the Russian armed forces had used chemical weapons in the besieged Mariupol. The far-right Ukrainian battalion specifically reported via Telegram that an unknown substance was dropped by a remote-controlled unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the city, leaving many people with respiratory problems and movement disorders.

The Ukrainian public television network Suspilne reported that so far there is no confirmation of this information from official sources. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an evening speech that the Russian armed forces could use chemical weapons, without saying that they had already been used.

Kyiv and Western governments say the chances of Russia using chemical weapons in the war are “very high.”

British Foreign Secretary Liz Tras said her country was “urgently cooperating” with its “partners” in the field to “verify the details” of the alleged use of chemical weapons.

“Any use of such weapons would be an inhumane escalation in this conflict and we will make (Russian President Vladimir) Putin and his regime accountable,” the British diplomat added via Twitter.
