Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the world to “prepare” for possible use of nuclear weapons by Russia during an interview with Ukrainian media.
“They should not wait for Russia to decide whether to use its nuclear weapons. “We have to prepare for that,” he told the Telegram in an interview with six Ukrainian news websites and the Ukrainian presidency.
“They need ‘medicine (for radioactivity), anti-aircraft shelters,'” he said. “You have to talk to them, sign treaties, have tough financial measures. “The Russians can use any weapon, I’m convinced.”
Yesterday, Volodymyr Zelensky said that “the whole world” should be “concerned” about the danger of Vladimir Putin, under the state of his military failures in Ukraine, resorting to a regular nuclear weapon.
“It’s not just me, I think the whole world, every country should be concerned,” he told CNN yesterday, a day after US intelligence chief William Burns said such a threat should not be taken lightly.
“We have not identified any specific elements, such as development or military measures that could enhance our concerns,” he said.
Following the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, the Kremlin announced that it had put its nuclear forces on alert.
Moscow will not use nuclear weapons in Ukraine unless there is an “existential threat” against Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov later told CNN.
According to the authoritative review Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Russia is equipped with “1588 developed nuclear warheads”, of which 812 on land missiles, 576 on submarines and 200 on bombers.
