Ecuador: 2.4 tonnes of cocaine were seized destined for Belgium

by

Ecuadorian police seized 2.4 tonnes of cocaine hidden in a banana container from the port of Guayaquil (southwest) in Belgium on Sunday, the interior ministry said.

“Two tonnes of four hundred and fifty-eight kilos of cocaine were seized,” the ministry said via Twitter.

Police found 2,461 packages of cocaine hidden in a consignment of bananas, one of the country’s main exports, during a search of a container. One person was arrested.

Ecuadorian law enforcement authorities seized a record 210 tonnes of drugs, mainly cocaine, in 2021, and have already seized more than 70 tonnes since the beginning of this year.

Although only a transit or storage country for drugs, Ecuador, between Colombia and Peru – the world’s top two cocaine producers – has seen a sharp rise in trafficking in recent years, mainly through its ports in the Pacific, while the retail sale of cocaine in its internal market is in full swing.
