Industries such as Tesla are preparing to reopen their factories in Shanghai as China’s most populous city tries to return to normal after a nearly three-week lockdown due to rising Covid cases.
It is worth noting, however, that most of the workers expected to return to the production lines will, as noted, live in the factory premises to be reopened.
Priority
Beijing announced last week that it has drawn up a “white list” of 666 companies that will priorityly reopen in Shanghai.
This list includes: Tesla, Volkswagen, semiconductor and medical supplies companies, etc., according to Reuters.
More specifically, according to sources cited by Reuters, it is preparing for a restart by calling workers at its Shanghai plant again, but notes that under the current restrictive measures, these workers will… have to sleep. in their workplace.
The goal of the Chinese authorities is to have managed to stop the spread of COVID-19 in Shanghai by Wednesday outside the quarantined areas.
To do this, they multiply the tests and transfer all the positive cases along with their close contacts to special isolation centers. Analysts and experts, however, say that this is an extremely ambitious goal.
Since March 10, more than 200 million PCR tests have been performed in Shanghai, China’s most populous city with a population of 25 million.
The new cases recorded in the city on Sunday were 21,395, with 561 of them being recorded outside the quarantined areas.
At the same time, however, as it became known, by April 15, only 65% of Shanghai residents were fully vaccinated.
The Chinese leadership is being pressured to find ways to defuse the lockdown situation, which is causing supply chain problems and hurting the Chinese economy just months before Xi Jinping was re-elected next fall.
It is recalled that Shanghai is not only the Chinese city with the largest population but also the business, commercial and economic / stock exchange center of China.
