US Treasury Secretary Janet Glenn will urge its members this week International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to step up pressure on Russia to end the “reckless war” in Ukraine, a senior ministry official said today.
Another official said that the Ministry of Finance will focus its efforts on repressing those seeking to slip away from the sweeping sanctions imposed on Russia, but also on those who facilitate such efforts.
Janet Glenn will represent the United States this week at the G20 finance ministers’ meeting. However, it will boycott some meetings if Russia participates in them, in order to underline Washington’s view that Moscow should be expelled from international economic institutions.
Ministry sources said Glenn was “deeply concerned” about the impact the war would have on the global economy, as well as the rise in food insecurity in emerging markets and developing countries. It also intends to discuss ways in which Russia can reduce its use of its energy revenues while giving the US allies time to find alternative sources.
