Ukrainian investigators have examined 269 bodies in Irpin, near Kyiv, after Ukrainian forces recaptured the city from the Russians, a police official said in late March.
The city, which had a pre-war population of 62,000, was the scene of heavy fighting until Russian forces withdrew from northern Ukraine to concentrate their operations in the east.
Dozens of new graves have been opened in a cemetery on the outskirts of Irpin. Today, under the watchful eye of some mourning relatives, the workers hurriedly dug another one.
“So far, we have examined 269 bodies,” said Sergi Panteleyev, the deputy head of the police forensic service, in a video interview. As he said, the forensic investigation is continuing to determine the cause of death of many victims. He also showed photos of charred relics.
Panteleyev said seven locations in Irpin where civilians were allegedly shot had been investigated, without giving further details.
Russia denies targeting civilians and denies allegations that its troops committed war crimes in the occupied territories of Ukraine.
