The … wild boar “Putin” changes its name in the Bavarian zoo

by

Zoo in Bavaria of Germanywho had given the name “Putin” to one of his wild boars due to his Russian genetic heritage, “rebaptized” the wild boar in a special event that took place today. The reason was obvious: The Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Eckard Mikishead of a wildlife park near the town of Melmaizel, said he had given the wild boar the surname of Russian President Vladimir Putin three years ago when he came to the zoo because of his ancestry.

Weighing more than 200 kg, this wild boar weighs about as much as three common wild boars found in Germany, he noted.

Lately, however, every time Mikis had to shout his name in front of visitors, he felt a “shudder” recalling the Russian president’s attack on Ukraine. He was also concerned about how Ukrainian visitors to the park might feel.

He thus decided that no animal in the park deserved to have that name, announcing in a post on social media the search for a new name for the Russian wild boar.

Proposals fell “rain”, exceeding 2,700. “Eberhofer” prevailed – the surname of a police officer from a popular series of German literature.

The wild boar was “rebaptized” today at a special event that included a cake with macaroons and cookies, which was decorated with five smiling pigs.
